Deepeeka Landsknecht Katzbalger Sword
Meticulously handcrafted by Deepeeka, this Landsknecht Katzbalger recreates the stout, close-combat sword carried by the famed German and Swiss mercenaries of the 1500s. Its 28 ½″ broad blade is tempered from C60 high-carbon steel and lightened with multiple fullers while a short ricasso reinforces the base for powerful cuts.
The hilt combines a hammered iron S-guard with protective rings, a carved hardwood grip capped by a brass ferrule, and a secure, long-lasting peened pommel. A wood-core scabbard, tightly wrapped in stitched leather and finished with brass fittings, is included. Balanced about 6″ ahead of the guard, the Katzbalger feels deliberately “burly” in hand—built to chop, hack, and hold up in tight ranks where polearms and greatswords reigned.
The Katzbalger (“cat-gutter” in popular folk etymology) served as the trademark sidearm of the Landsknechts—colorful, highly trained mercenary infantry who dominated European battlefields in the early 16th century. Shorter than battlefield greatswords and optimized for crowded melees, the Katzbalger’s broad blade and distinctive S- or figure-eight guard provided quick, robust handling when formations closed and halberds tangled.
