Clamshell Gauntlets – 16-Gauge Steel (Pair)
Built for reenactment, stage, LARP, and display, this set of late-medieval clamshell gauntlets protects the hand and wrist with overlapping plates that move as one. Most plates are swivel-riveted for a wide range of motion, letting you grip weapons securely while keeping your knuckles, thumb, and wrist shielded. The interior is blackened to help resist rust, and the included separate leather gauntlets (liners) fit beneath the steel shells for comfort and a confident fit.
From the 14th–15th centuries, mitten or “clamshell” gauntlets became popular with knights and men-at-arms. Their unified finger plate offered excellent impact distribution and durability in the melee, while articulated lames and flared cuffs preserved mobility for sword, polearm, or lance work.
